Why Is There a Pool Chlorine Shortage?
There are two main reasons for the pool chlorine shortage. The first is the increased demand for pool supplies during the pandemic depleted stock. The second is a chemical fire at one of the main manufacturers of trichlor tablets.
Increased Demand (and Hoarding)
With stay-at-home orders in place since March 2020, pool owners across the country made far more use of their pools than a normal year. And more people in the pool more often means you need to use chlorine more often. So that depleted the available supply.
And much like when the pandemic started when people started buying and hoarding toilet paper and disinfectant wipes, now people are buying as much pool chlorine as they can get their hands on.
Chemical Fire
The other main cause of the chlorine shortage stems from a devastating fire at the BioLab plant in Westlake, Louisiana in August of 2020. The plant was damaged by Hurricane Laura, and the fire burned the plant to the ground. It also released chlorine gas into the air. No one was injured since the plant and much of the area had been evacuated due to the hurricane.
An investigation into the fire is still underway. In the meantime, the company is hoping to rebuild and begin production once again.
