Landscape Design
Woodfield Outdoors is a landscape design and landscape architecture company serving homeowners throughout the greater Baltimore area. We work closely with you to turn your landscaping ideas into reality – ensuring your landscape features get off to a healthy start with room to grow.
Landscape architecture is a broad field. It encompasses the analysis, planning, design, management, and stewardship of the natural and built environments. At Woodfield Outdoors, we specialize in residential design.
While the area of landscape architecture includes landscape design, it is more than that. Landscape architecture works with the natural and built environment in a sustainable way, and creates living, breathing outdoor living spaces that are an extension of your home. Even more, we develop creative landscape designs and handle the installation of all plant material and hardscape features.
Please note that we do not do maintenance of your landscaping – that’s up to you or a lawn service.
Our Landscaping Process
Over the years, we’ve developed a process to deliver exceptional landscape design services to our clients. We take advantage of any existing outdoor living areas and create a landscape design that meshes with the overall look of your home, patio, outdoor kitchen, pool area, etc. Our designers bring years of knowledge and experience to each project. Working closely with you, we will create an extraordinary space that meets and exceeds your expectations.
There are 4 main steps in this process:
1
Site Analysis and Planning
Our site analysis and planning involves at least one in-person visit to your property, where we take measurements and notes, test the soil, make note of existing structures, drainage issues, scenic vistas, areas where we need to increase privacy, and more.
2
Site Design
Site design happens when we review all of our notes, and incorporate your needs and desires into a master plan. The site design would include things such as grading, drainage, irrigation, overall landscape design and hardscape design, including elements such as walkways, retaining walls, patios, pools, water features, lighting, and more.
3
Stewardship Planning
Stewardship planning goes hand in hand with the overall site design plan. At this stage, we make plans to manage invasive species, create wildlife habitat gardens, encourage the use of native plants, and develop rainwater and erosion control plans.
4
Implementation
Assuming you hire us to implement the master plan, we would schedule a date to begin any demolition and site preparation. The landscape design and hardscape elements would be completed in phases, which would be outlined in your contract. Once implementation of the master plan is complete, it’s time for you to sit back, relax, and enjoy your home paradise!
A Note About Selecting Plant Material
The site design phase above mentioned selecting plant material. That’s not quite as simple as it sounds. Some things to consider include:
- Choosing the right plant material such as flowers, shrubs, grasses, and trees, that will grow in Maryland and in your soil
- Considering color scheme
- Considering all four seasons
- Texture and height of plant material
- Proper placement of plants as far as sunlight, shade, wind, foot traffic, etc.
- Planting so shrubs and trees have room to grow
- Possible need for irrigation
We will help you navigate and explore the options unique to your home and lifestyle.
